What are your election issues?

History Matters is gearing up for the next general elections to be held in 2009 by putting together relevant and interesting resources for readers who want to be informed about the promises that political parties are making to the electorate.

What are your election issues? What are the problems and challenges that you feel need to be dealt with urgently and effectively?

At the top of my list are: Job creation, crime reduction, a national healthcare system and improving the quality of education in South Africa.

What issues are at the top of your list? Please add to this list, write to local councillors and MP’s, protest and sign petitions, and most importantly make your mark on next year’s election ballot.

Health, education and safety top my list. But another issue for me personally is that South Africans abroad cannot vote, despite the provisions of section 19 of the constitution that guarantees my political rights as a South African citizen. At the very least, I think South Africans abroad who pay taxes to the Republic should have this right upheld. As it stands, I’m disenfranchised.

If I recall correctly, this issue was determined in a Constitutional Court judgement some years ago, probably ahead of 1999 elections. Lauren, perhaps you can find this judgement and post it on HM so that we can all better understand the reasoning and re-visit the issue of needs be.

great material, thanks Lauren. Insisting that eligible voters have to be within the borders of the republic on election day to cast denies that South Africans abroad have a stake in the republic. And yet we all want them to come home.
