The Social Justice Coalition is planning a Mass Rally for Democracy in Zimbabwe to take place on 30th July.

Mark this date in your diaries and watch this space for details.

There will be a planning meeting for this rally on Saturday 12 July at 3pm at the SJC offices at 122 Longmarket Street Cape Town. Here’s the statement I received from the SJC (note that the SJC contact details are at the bottom):

Dear all,

The Social Justice Coalition, in conjunction with other civil society organisations, is mobilising a mass rally for democracy for the 30th of July in support of Zimbabweans and to draw attention to the political and humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe. We would like to invite you to our planning session which will be held on Saturday 12 July at 3:00pm at the above offices. This planning session requires the participation of all members of progressive civil society. Let us ensure that we make a strong statement in support of the democratic and social justice aspirations of the Zimbabwean majority.

We would appreciate if you can confirm your organisation’s participation with Hannah Lane on (c) +27 82 793 8832 (w) +27 21 422 1490 email hannahmorgan@gmail.com.

The Social Justice Coalition was formed on the 16th June, 2008, in response to the attacks against foreign nationals and also the current political situation in Zimbabwe. It was recognised that South African society is struggling with poverty, social inequality, violations of human rights and crimes of all sorts, particularly against the poor, vulnerable and marginalised. The Social Justice Coalition was formed with the intention of mobilising individuals from within every community in South Africa to address these issues.

Working together with other community organisations, civil society organisations, faith-based organisations and other NGOs, the Social Justice Coalition will seek to tackle issues of social inequality within communities, and also put pressure on government and other local and international agencies to carry out their respective mandates, according to the Constitution of South Africa, and international human rights norms and standards.

The Social Justice Coalition has a framework of non-violent, peaceful demonstration and constructive mediation, and aims to create a non-violent society by being inclusive of all, regardless of race, political background, culture, gender, religion, social status, nationality or any other. Every member is free to contribute in all contexts, so that together we can constructively address issues facing society.

Sincerely,

Hannah Lane
